What Is an Affidavit of Support?
An Affidavit of Support is a sworn declaration by a sponsor (the affiant) committing to provide financial support to a beneficiary for a specific purpose or period. It creates a legal undertaking — backed by the oath administered by a notary public — that the sponsor will shoulder the beneficiary's expenses.
In Philippine practice, Affidavits of Support are most frequently required by the Bureau of Immigration, Philippine embassies and consulates, schools and universities, and various government agencies administering social programs.
When Is an Affidavit of Support Required?
- Immigration and visa applications — for family members joining a relative abroad, or for a dependent accompanying a principal visa holder
- Tourist or study visa sponsorship — embassies often require a sponsor in the destination country to execute an Affidavit of Support for a Filipino applicant
- School and university enrollment — financial aid offices or scholarship programs may require proof of family support
- Government assistance programs — some 4Ps or TUPAD applications require an income/support declaration
- Medical assistance applications — PCSO and DSWD may require it when the patient relies on a sponsor
Required Elements of a Philippine Affidavit of Support
- Sponsor's identity — full name, age, citizenship, occupation, and address
- Beneficiary's identity — full name, relationship to sponsor, address
- Nature of the relationship — parent-child, sibling, spouse, employer-employee, etc.
- Specific undertaking — what the sponsor is committing to (tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs, medical expenses)
- Duration of support — for a specific trip, school year, or stated period
- Capacity to support — a brief statement of the sponsor's occupation or source of income

For immigration and visa purposes, embassies and consulates typically require additional supporting documents alongside the Affidavit of Support:
- Latest Income Tax Return (ITR) or Certificate of Employment with salary
- Bank statements for the last 3–6 months
- Copy of sponsor's passport (if abroad) or government ID
- Proof of relationship (birth certificate, marriage certificate)
If the sponsor is based abroad, the Affidavit of Support must usually be notarized at the Philippine Embassy or Consulate at the sponsor's location, or apostilled/authenticated according to the destination country's requirements.
